Chilblains Resources

Chilblains a pesky painful and itchy problems that occur on the toes of the feet. Chilblains are caused when a cold foot is warmed up too quickly for the microcirculation to respond. This failure to respond sets of an inflammatory reaction producing the pain and itchy. Chilblains have an initial red appearance, but chilblains later change to a blue black appearance as waste products accumulate in the skin, causing further irritation. There is not really a satisfactory treatment for chilblains except for preventing them. Chilblains are prevented by not letting the foot get cold and if it does get cold to avoid direct heat to warm the foot. Vasodilators have been recommended for chilblains to prevent the vasoconstriction associated with the cold and have been of some use in the more severe cases to prevent chilblains from occurring.
