How does a stone get into your shoe when walking or running?

I went for a walk yesterday along an old, dusty, dry, unmade/unsurfaced but flat road. I was wearing a non-descript pair of trainers. I walked about four miles and had to stop on three occasions to remove stones from my shoe.
