Running shoes; evidence for ‘specific’ shoes?

I was recently on The Student Room and various people were saying that you should go to JJB/ other sports shops and be assessed for running shoes for 5k+ in running distances, whereas others simply bought the cheapest/ had the best reviews online and with no analysis. I was just curious as to know if there is any evidence for analysises that do help prevent injury whilst running and finding ‘the right shoe’. Many thanks in advance =) Anon
