Although by far most cases of gout experience the first attacks after age 40, my cousin who is now 52 but smoked and drank heavily from age 16 had his first and very severe attack at age 27. People with the gout gene and the hemochromatosis gene (massive iron accumulation), both of which are fairly common, but the combination is very rare may develop gout as teen agers. Did you develop gout before age 40
