Posterior Tibial Tendonitis

Posterior tibial tendonitis is a condition that is often confused with posterior tibial tendon dysfunction. Posterior tibial tendonitis is becoming increasingly common with the trend for runners to forefoot strike which overload the tendon and makes the muscle works stronger. A number of runners are unable to make the transition for forefoot striking and the tendon cannot adapt to this extra load placed on the tendon. The symptoms of posterior tibial tendonitis are usually felt around the medial malleolus and sometimes further forward into the foot. There is usually not any or very muscle swelling. The best long term treatment for posterior tibial tendonitis is to reduce the load on the tendon with foot orthotics.
