On August 26th, 2010 I tripped in the basement and lunged out with my left foot to keep from falling, landing on the outside ball of my foot (without my heel down). I heard and felt a snap, the result was a Jones fracture. (5th metatarsal) My foot was hard-casted by an orthopedist after about four days and he told me no weight bearing, rest as much as possible, drink my milk and elevate at night and no NSAID drugs (ibuprofen, aspirin, naproxen), as they can inhibit bone growth.
